RESEARCH INTERESTS: The general field of signal transduction is the focus of work in my laboratory, and I am currently examining the regulation of metabolism in adipocytes. Obesity is an increasing health problem in this country and excess calories are stored in adipocytes. The mobilization of lipid stored in adipocytes is known as lipolysis, and I am examining the regu-lation of lipolysis by catecholamines, which are thought to be the major short-term physiological regulators of lipolysis. Recently renewed interest in adipocyte metabolism has arisen because of the finding that obese-hyperglycemic mice do not make a protein in their adipocytes known as leptin, which appears to regulate food intake. Current emphasis in my laboratory is on the regulation of b1 catecholamine receptor function by phosphorylation, the effects of thyroid hormones on the b1 and b3 adrenergic receptors, and leptin mRNA regulation in rat adipocytes.
